Our Methodology

How We Grade Roofers

Every contractor in our directory receives an independent A through D grade based on six weighted dimensions totaling 100 points. Our algorithm pulls from public data sources — we never accept payment to influence grades.

1

We Collect Data

Reviews, licensing records, certifications, website quality, and service details from public sources.

2

We Score Six Dimensions

Each contractor is evaluated across six categories with specific point weights.

3

We Assign a Grade

Points are totaled and mapped to a letter grade from A (best) to D (needs improvement).

The Six Dimensions

Each contractor is scored across these categories. Points are weighted to reflect what matters most when hiring a roofer.

Reviews & Reputation
25 pts

We aggregate ratings from Google, Yelp, and the BBB. Review volume, recency, and response patterns all factor in. A contractor with 200 reviews averaging 4.6 scores higher than one with 5 reviews at 5.0.

Negative reviews with professional responses are weighted less harshly than ignored complaints.

Licensing & Certification
20 pts

Colorado doesn't have state roofing licenses — licensing varies by municipality. We verify local contractor licenses, liability insurance, bonding, and workers' compensation coverage.

Manufacturer certifications (GAF Master Elite, CertainTeed Select, Owens Corning Preferred) and Haag Certification earn additional points.

Service Specialization
15 pts

A general contractor who 'also does roofing' scores lower than a dedicated roofing company. We evaluate how many roofing services are offered — replacements, storm damage, metal roofing, flat roofs, gutters, etc.

Contractors offering both residential and commercial roofing with documented processes score highest.

Experience & Track Record
15 pts

How long has this company been operating? We check year established, consistent business history, and staff qualifications. A company with 15 years of roofing experience scores differently than a 6-month-old operation.

We don't penalize newer companies heavily — strong credentials and reviews can offset limited history.

Profile Completeness
15 pts

Does this contractor have a professional website, photos, detailed service descriptions, and verified contact information? Incomplete profiles suggest the business may not be actively maintaining their public presence.

Published business hours, service area descriptions, and 'about us' content all contribute to this score.

Response & Availability
10 pts

Roofing emergencies — storm damage, active leaks — don't wait for business hours. We check whether contractors offer emergency services, 24/7 availability, and multiple contact methods.

Free estimates and quick response time indicators are positive signals in this dimension.

What Each Grade Means

Points from all six dimensions are totaled and mapped to a letter grade.

A
Exceptional 90–100 points

Top-tier roofing contractor. Excellent reviews across platforms, verified licensing and insurance, manufacturer certifications (GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning), and strong community reputation. These are the contractors we'd recommend to family.

B
Above Average 75–89 points

Strong credentials and good reviews with minor gaps. Maybe they're newer and building their review history, or they cover fewer specialized services. Still a solid choice for most roofing needs.

C
Average 60–74 points

Meets basic requirements but may lack depth in specialization or have mixed reviews. Do your due diligence — ask for references, verify their specific experience with your type of roofing work, and get everything in writing.

D
Below Average 40–59 points

Limited credentials, few or no reviews, or an incomplete business profile. This doesn't necessarily mean they do bad work — they may be brand new or simply haven't invested in their online presence. Proceed with extra caution.

Our Commitment to Fairness

No Pay-to-Play

Grades are never influenced by advertising, payment, or business relationships. Every contractor earns their grade through real-world performance data.

Algorithm-Driven

Scores are calculated automatically from publicly available data sources. No one on our team manually adjusts grades or plays favorites.

Updated Regularly

Data is refreshed from Google Business Profiles, municipal licensing databases, BBB records, and industry registries on a regular schedule.

How Contractors Can Improve Their Grade

Your grade isn't permanent. Here's what moves the needle.

1
Complete your Google Business Profile

Add photos, detailed service descriptions, business hours, and respond to every review. This is the single biggest lever — it affects Reviews, Profile Completeness, and Response dimensions simultaneously.

2
Keep licensing and certifications current

Maintain your municipal contractor license, renew certifications (GAF, CertainTeed, Haag), and keep insurance and bonding active. Lapsed credentials drop your Licensing score immediately.

3
Engage with customer reviews

Respond professionally to both positive and negative reviews. A thoughtful response to a 1-star review tells potential customers more about your business than ten 5-star reviews with no reply.

4
Claim your listing on Colorado Roof Guys

Verified listings get a trust badge and allow you to update your service details, contact information, and credentials directly. Claiming also helps us verify your information is accurate.
